Homes, farmland and other livelihoods were washed away by the heavy rains and subsequent landslides. Over 17.06 million people in 16 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout the Chinese mainland had been affected. "Affecting more than 9.7 million people, the disaster has so far forced 300,000 locals to be evacuated from parts of Hunan, Guangdong, Chongqing, Guizhou and Sichuan since last Tuesday," he told China Daily yesterday.Īs of last night, the seasonal rains - which struck late last week and continued over the weekend - had swept 204 to their deaths and 79 people were reported missing.
